What red iron framing is

Red iron is hot-rolled structural steel, the same I-beam and wide-flange shape used in commercial construction. The name comes from the red-oxide primer that coats it at the mill. In a metal building kit, red iron forms the primary frame: the columns and rafters that carry the whole load to the foundation.

Its advantage is reach. A red iron frame spans wide and clear, so a 50-foot shop has no posts in the middle of the floor. It takes heavy snow and high wind, and it lasts. The tradeoff is weight and price. Red iron is heavy, so raising it wants equipment and a crew, and it costs more per pound than tube. For a wide-span building stamped for real snow and wind loads, that cost buys capacity you cannot get any other way.

The red primer is a starting coat, not the finish. On an enclosed building the frame lives inside the shell, protected from weather, and a quality red iron frame holds up for decades. Tube steel

What tube steel framing is

Tube steel is hollow structural tubing, square or rectangular in section, lighter than red iron of the same length. It usually arrives galvanized, so it resists rust without paint. Its advantage is handling and cost. Tube is light enough that one or two people can raise a small building with hand tools, and it costs less, so a carport or a single-car garage comes in cheaper on a tube frame. For short spans and modest loads, it does the job without paying for steel you will not use.

The limit is span and load. Tube carries less than red iron, so once a building gets wide or has to hold heavy snow, a tube frame needs interior posts or does not qualify at all. The galvanized coating helps corrosion, but it does not add structural reach.

Tube frames are sold by wall thickness, measured in gauge, where a lower number means thicker steel. You will see 14-gauge tube on lighter carports and 12-gauge on stouter garages and covers. The galvanized finish is the quiet upside here: it shrugs off rust without paint, which suits an open carport that takes weather on every side.

Let the building decide. Start with the clear width and the heaviest load it has to carry, then the frame follows. Here is how the common projects land:
